Salad is undoubtedly a really healthy alternative to all the foods out there. There are n number of ways you can make a salad but if we deconstruct them, they are basically the combination of some very basic stuff. Let us discuss them one by one.
A very important component of a great salad. This is the first thing you see in a salad. So it keep in mind to start with a bed of greens. Now the term greens can be spinach, cabbage, lettuce, rocket salad etc. But traditionally it is lettuce. Get crazy with the greens until you find a great combination. Almost forgot, these greens also provide a bit of crunch as well so choose wisely.
No! We do not mean spices for flavoring here. We mean different types of veggies or fruits. In other words, the character of the salad. Fruits like cranberries, apple, raisins etc or veggies can be added for flavors. Avocado, tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, olives, onions are just some selections which are universal and can be put in literally any salad. Again, try out different combinations just because you can.
Non vegetarian selection like grilled chicken breast, steak, lamb, fish etc can be put. As for vegetarians, they can go for different types of beans, tofu, pulses and other protein rich food. The main purpose of adding this to the salad is to make it balanced protein wise too.
Olive oil, lime juice, salt and pepper, chili flakes, oregano or parsley and that’s it. This is one of the most basic salad dressing you can make yourself and believe it or not, it takes the salad profile to a next level. As for the fancy dressings like Caesar or thousand island, there are various recipes to make them at home or otherwise buy a premade dressing. Buying them from the market just makes the process less time consuming.
Nuts, croutons, edible seeds, crispy bacon are just some of the crunchy stuff you can add to your salad. Many people just add store bought chips to make the salad crunchy. This is like the greens an important component of the salad as this component is actually the one which decided whether your salad has a crunchy texture or a soft texture.
These are the basic ingredients required for a salad. There may be more components other than this but ultimately they also get covered in this broad classification.
